talking points 11

So I started on google. That was kind of difficult. I found some articles. From one of the articles this quote "Radio, television, film, and the other products of media culture provide materials out of which we forge our very identities; our sense of selfhood; our notion of what it means to be male or female; our sense of class, of ethnicity and race, of nationality, of sexuality; and of "us" and "them." Media images help shape our view of the world and our deepest values: what we consider good or bad, positive or negative, moral or evil."

Teenagers view images in the media.  Images are all around. The statement above is very true. Teens are influenced by everything around them.  It actually starts earlier then the teenage years.  I think it starts from birth pretty much.  I don't think its always from the media though.  I think its from the people around us. The people around us weither it be family or friends have a major influence on who we are and who we become. However we do have our own minds and make our own decisions.
One of the videos I chose was from youtube and it is a teenagers responding to the types of images he saw as a child.

I can also say this the shows and programs I watched when I was little are not as funny now. Also the shows that were on when I was little would not be on today. Like Ren and Stimpy Rocco's Modern Life, Roundhouse, and many others.
I also used one of the videos that another classmate used but a different one.

I like in the video the teen that was saying that you should wear what you want no matter what everyone says. I do think Macklemore is a good example. I think he shows that you can be who you want to be no matter what anyone says.  I think if good images are put out in the media as well as bad images they'll have more examples of what to see or what to take in.  Its all on what we take in and what we watch. Another thing I want to mention is Hate is not taught. Hate is learned .  If hate was not taught like it was then we would be in a more peaceful world although I think that there will always be hate because some people are judgmental and  think their view is the right view.

glee

So sorry guys I'm a little behind on my blog posts. But I will catch up.
I not being a avid Glee watcher am now probably going to be addicted to watching it.  The show is very entertaining. From the episodes I watched I can see where the show has its good points as well as the bad points.  I feel like the Glee Director should have stepped in more with everything that was or continues to happen with Kurt. If he had stepped in sooner maybe the bullying would not be happening as much.  When the main bully picked on Kurt but also kissed him I was really shocked.  The bully forced himself onto Kurt.  But I was also shocked because I was not expecting him to do that.  I feel like Kurt's almost brother should have stuck up for him more.  I feel like a lot of bullies or bullying can be stopped if people would cooperate.  If people would tell more about it.  If adults would listen more.  I wish Kurt could be more open with his parents. although I can understand where he is coming from.  Coming out to your parent/parents, brother, sister, or any other member of your family is a very hard thing to do. When someone said how can his dad not have known it kind of upset me.  Just because a person is a certain way or acts a certain way it does not necessarily mean that that person fits into that category. By the way why do we have to fit into a category. Why can't we just be who we are without any judgement.  I really dislike how we have to put labels on everything. I saw a question somewhere that said "do you like girls or boys?" and the person said yes. I don't like fitting into a certain category. I just want to be me.  I think a lot of people would just like to be themselves without any judgement.

tricia rose synopsis

I think that when Tricia Rose says both sides are wrong its great.  Every side can have their own opinion. It doesn't mean that necessarily that side is right. In all honesty I don't really listen to hip hop.  I don't really understand what the difference between hip hop and rap is.  I know a lot of rappers swear and curse.  Sometimes rap can be degrading towards just about anyone.  But at the same time rap/ hip hop can be powerful and can come across really well put really well said.  When I used to listen to rap/hip hop, I really liked Tupac.  I like the older rap music better then the newer stuff. I think who is to define whats good and bad in hip hop. I think when Tricia Rose says "Hip hop is not dead, but it is gravely ill." I could very well agree with that statement.  I think maybe if they rived hip hop or rap, like the days of Run DMC, Beastie Boys, LL COOL J, Missy Elliott that hip hop/ rap would be in a much better place then it is at right now. I feel like the days of old hip hop and rap were better.  Nowadays I don't know what to think of.  I do have one question though. What is the difference between rap and hip hop? I never understood the difference. Is it the same thing? For me I don't understand the use of the N word never have never will.  To me it is extremely offensive. In all honesty I don't get why any one uses it.  I understand people try to reclaim words, but why such offensive words?  A few semesters ago I heard a amazing speaker Marco McWilliams speak. Now if everyone could hear him speak I think they would understand where this world is at and where this world will continue to be at if we don't progress.

Kimmel Quotes

Generally speaking, violence always arises out of impotence. It is the hope of those who have no power.
—Hannah Arendt
This can be true and not true at the same time.  People who don't have power doesn't necessarily mean they are violent. I can understand what Arendt was saying though. Sometimes the people that have been picked on or bullied get sick of the bullying and the torment they face, which is most of the time on a daily basis. Some people that get picked on go to extreme measures to (what they think is) solving the problem. I think that there are ways we can work against bullying and get rid of it if not all of it most of it.  Bullying is still apparent and happens on a daily basis. Adults and children are bullied or do the bullying. When will it stop. I don't know if it ever will. I f people are negative a lot there will be a negative outcome.

Alvin Poussaint, a psychia- trist at Harvard Medical School, wrote that
in America, violence is considered fun to kids. They play video games where they chop people’s heads off and blood gushes and it’s fun, it’s entertainment. It’s like a game. And I think this is the psychology of these kids—this “Let’s go out there and kill like on television.” (Klein & Chancer, 2000, p. 132)
I can't agree with this statement in its entirety.  Just because children see something on tv, play some video games, or listen to a certain type of music, doesn't mean they will become violent. It also doesn't mean that anything that the child does is there parents fault.  The children weather they are violent are not should be held accountable for what they are doing.  A parent can raise their children to the best of their ability. But children do have their own minds and make their own decisions.

Eminem poignantly illus- trated the role of “gay-baiting” in peer interactions. In his view, calling someone a “faggot” is not a slur on his sexuality but on his gender. He says,
The lowest degrading thing that you can say to a man . . . is to call him a faggot and try to take away his manhood. Call him a sissy. Call him a punk. “Faggot” to medoesn’t necessarily mean gay people.“Faggot” to me just means taking away your manhood. (Kim, 2001, p. 5)
To me the word faggot shouldn't be used at all.  No matter what a person thinks it means. It is a highly offensive and derogatory term. Terms like that and retarded and gay, should not be used. Retarded and gay (when its/they are used in the wrong context)  are so highly offensive we should educate people more on why its highly offensive. Why they should not use these words out of context. Wethier or not the term faggot is a slur on gender or sexuality; it should not be used at all. I like Eminem and some of his music but at times the lyrics can be offensive.

Brave and peggy ornestein cinderella ate my daughter

First of all if you couldn't tell during class Brave is my favorite Disney Princess movie.  I have read Cinderella Ate my daughter. Ornstein mentions how when her daughter was little before the influence of children around her, her daughter loved thomas and played with the toys of her choosing. Ornstein never taught her daughter about the story of snow white. Ornestein says

"I had never told Daisy the story of Snow White. I had purposely kept it from her because even setting aside the obvious sexism Snow herself is such and incredible pill. Her sole virtue which as far as I can tell is tidiness----she is forever scrubbing dusting nagging the dwarfs to wash their filthy mitts(okay the girl has a ear for a catchy melody, I'll give you that. But thats where it ends.)"
I can agree in some instances but in others I can disagree. Snow White was the first ever disney movie that was put out there. Snow White defiantly fits that time period.  She cleans all the time and is somewhat of a house wife/maid.   I think the influence of people around you affect the decisions or choices you make.  Im not saying that they do this all the time. But for instance take children's programs. What do they show during the programs? They show commercials for toys and junk food and other things that appease the children's eyes.

I think Ornstein would commend the movie Brave because I think Brave in powers girls to live their dreams.  In the movie Brave the main character Merida wants to be able to be free. She doesn't want to get married and do what a "normal" princess is supposed to do. She wants to be able to live her life free to do what she so choses to do. Merida I think is defiantly a feminist. She doesn't like to do what she's supposed to do. She likes to breath the fresh air and partake in nature.

I think that Brave is one of the better Disney princess films out there. But at the same time I think that Disney can still expand more. One thing that has bothered me about Disney Princess films is that they have not had a Disney princess in a wheelchair or a Disney princess that is developmentally disabled.  I think that Disney should advance more and chose different characters. Characters that are more diverse in every aspect.

reflection from knowledgeable to knowledge-able

So I really enjoyed the video clip and there was a lot of information to take in. I like what they said "we can not live the next hundred years the way we live the past hundred." I agree with this completely. During the time that we have lived we have gone through a lot. Everyone has gone through a lot. What this is saying pretty much is the way we lived in the past we can not live in the future.  We can not be so negative and so down playing.  I wish when you saw people things media, etc that everything was more truthful. I also wish that when the media puts out media that they don't always focus on the bad. I wish at times they focused on more of the good. I feel like we can change the world no matter how fast or how slow.  I like the saying slow and steady wins the race. I think the would can change by us making it better. It does not just get better.  If we work together I feel like we can change lives. Another term I liked that he used in his Ted talk was meaning makers. We can make meaning out of life. We can do stuff not just by sitting there  but by doing. By getting out there and exploring we are already changing things.  When I was younger I would go outside a lot and play and have fun ride my bike go camping go on hikes. I enjoyed being outside. I think nowadays we need to explore more. I think more classes and more learning experiences can be envolved. Although technology does some great things.  Technology has made the world better but at the same time it has made the world worse at the same time.

Rise and Fall of the American Teenager argument

Hines argument is trying to state that "The purpose of this book is to sketch out a useful context for thinking about the young-----one that jettisons obsolete and destructive aspects of our contemporary view of teenagers." What the author is trying to do pretty much is find out the truth about teenagers.  He want to know what teenagers are really about. "Are they really important?" Well in my honest opinion I think they really are important. All people are important. I don't think people lack importance.
While some teenagers are mean and some get in trouble. There are the ones that are good and the ones that have bright futures. Teenagers are defiantly important in todays society. While teenagers from way back when are a lot different then teenagers now. They were also alike.  Teenagers from back in the day had a lot more responsibilities and had to grow up faster. They became adults sooner, had jobs sooner, got married sooner. Teens back in the day had more to go through had more things to handle, or thats what society thinks. Teens quit school early to help their parents out and there really wasn't any child labor laws. Now you can only really work at a certain age. Some teens quit school but on their own accord because either they don't like it or sometimes it just not for them, (but there are also other reasons.) Yes teens can be troublesome at times but at other times they are helpful and kind.  I don't think its necessarily right for us to judge people just because of their age. Just because someone is young does not mean they do not know things.  Yes they are still learning. Everyone makes mistakes along the way. We do learn from those mistakes. I think if we can learn from them and take something good away from them that will make us better people in the end.  Teenagers are most defiantly necessary. We were all teens at one point and we all went through those awkward years but thats what everyone goes through eventually.

a tangle of discourses quotes

"A powerful, pervasive story about adolescence is that it is a clear, predictable (but turbulent) stage that teenagers inevitably undergo as they grow into adulthood. " This statement is true and untrue all teenagers go through adolescents. Some may consider adolescents a bit awkward. I think it all depends on how the teenager goes through that adolescent period.  I think it all depends on what happens and what kind of events are thrown your way.  We all have different experiences and some of our lives are much more difficult or different then others. In my honest opinion I don't think adolescents is at all times predictable. Adolescents is a time of ups, downs and spirals. It all depends on what direction we take and all the twists and turns along the way.

"Adolescence is discursively framed as a stage that seems to require a degree of self-refection, it is also marginalized (in terms of voice and self-refection) and often laced with current, popular concern about adolescents as dangerous, ungoverned and in need of control." All in all this is a well said statement. Adolescence is a time where teenagers not all the time but sometimes need guidance in everyday happenings.  I don't think we necessarily have to control this time period in a teenagers life but we do need to sometimes push them along the way.  Some teenagers are free spirited and some even like to live by their own rules. At times this may be dangerous but other times teens need the ball in their own court. Sometimes they need to make their own rules. As adults we can help them along the way but at times we won't always be there to help them. They need to learn how to do it on their own.

"I know with my parents sometimes they’ll turn things around. Like when they want me to take responsibility for something they’ll say you’re supposed to act like an adult...but then um when I am whatever taking responsibility or when I’m out for the whole day doing my own things and then I want to go to a party or something they’ll say ‘you’re not 21’. (Vienna) " Parents do sometimes put a lot of responsibilities onto teens. I think some parents do this because they know their teens can handle this. I however don't think its fair when parents are contradicting of what they originally say. I know teens can be confusing but parents can be just as confusing. Like teens they can mean one thing and say another. I defiantly experienced this as a adolescent but I also had a very rough time during this period. All most parents want is whats best for their children. They want them to succeed in the best way possible. In order to do that I think teens sometimes need clear cut rules guidelines and not have their parent or parents confusing them.

Do you think adolescents are predictable ? Why or Why not? And do you think they should have more control in their lives ? Why or why not?

Unlearning the myths that Bind Us Linda Christensen argument

This author Linda Christensen argues that "Our society's culture industry colonizes their minds and teaches them how to act, live, and dream. The indoctrination hits young children especially hard." When young children/ young adults view movies, cartoons, magazines, tv; these images tend to influence what happens in their daily lives. This makes children believe that they have a certain image to follow and maintain. Some of these images tend to fit certain stereotypes and tends to not really represent what is real in todays society.  If people believe that the media doesn't have any power over them at all this is not true.  Media and other related things have lots of control over us.  The things images etc that we view on a daily basis is quite outstanding. When I was little and used to watch a lot of movies a lot of the disney movies that involved princesses that fit that pretty girl need to be saved by a prince sort of stereotype. Now if I went back to watch these movies I would see a great difference in them. I would view them with a since of more knowing society and how they are pictured.  The author makes another good point in the article about how the students try to argue that they are not influenced by media yet here they sit/stand in their name brand clothing. While a lot of what the author has to say is true.  I think as time changes media and other aspects of media start to change. While some media images have had a negative impact on us I think other images have had a positive impact on us. A movie that is not mentioned in this article is a movie called Brave. Brave is about a princess who wants to be her own savior she does not want to marry. She wants to have fun and enjoy life and not be tied down by a marriage. So while media does affect us as children and adults. It has positive aspects and negative aspects and it all depends on how we take them and understand them.

How has things that we have seen as children influence us nowadays?

media and ideology quotes

"George W. Bush suggested that "dark dungeons of evil on the internet" were partly to blame for school violence." It was also said that "politicians from across the political spectrum focused on violent video games as one of the causes of the violence." What this quote is basically saying is the media and images that teenagers view online on tv and in video games etc, cause teenagers to act irrationally. People think that just because a teenager sees something on a video game they play or something online that they see that this will influence them to do horrible things and or make bad decisions. While sometimes this is the case it is not the case all the time. People have their own minds that they can make up while they view these things it may effect them in the decisions that they make. I would not blame all of their actions on these things though.  People may see something and say o let me go do that. But that was them that made that decisions to go do that.  Someone might have told them to do something but again that was them that decided to follow that.  They could always make the choice and not follow that.

"One of the principle reasons why media images often become so controversial is that they are objectionable."  Some of the media images that they put out there can be viewed as bad or good.  I have a feeling that the media put images out there that will have a wow factor. The wow factor is what draws the viewers in.  It is something that might shock or amaze someone. It draws a viewer in because its something that interest them or its something that the media makes it seem interesting. One of the things that upsets me is that I feel like the media does not care what they put out there.  I feel like they are just there to do their job.  It feels like sometimes they don't think before they act.   They just want to do whatever it takes to get what needs to be done done.

"Consent is something that is won; ruling groups in a society actively seek to have their worldview accepted by all members of society as the universal way of thinking." This is completely understandable. Groups/society try to put out ideas and try to see if they can be acknowledged and taken on by other people. They try and see if they can get other people to believe what they believe in.
Sometimes I think people go to extremes to have their view accepted.  Sometimes people even think their view is the only view.

Do you think Media (internet, tv, etc) influences peoples decisions that they make? How and why?
